Pay rise formulas

New pay

New = current × (1 + rise% ÷ 100)

A 5% rise on £32,000 is £32,000 × 1.05 = £33,600.

Real-terms change

(1 + rise) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1

A 5% rise with 3% inflation: 1.05 ÷ 1.03 − 1 = 1.94%.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out a percentage pay rise?

Subtract your old pay from your new pay, divide by the old pay and multiply by 100. Going from £32,000 to £34,000 is £2,000 ÷ £32,000 × 100 = 6.25%.

What is a real-terms pay rise?

It’s your rise after allowing for inflation. A 5% rise when prices go up 3% is a real-terms rise of about 1.9%, because your money buys only a little more than before.

How much more will I take home?

Less than the gross rise, because tax, National Insurance and pension contributions come off it. The figures here are all before deductions.
