How to calculate VAT

VAT (Value Added Tax) is added to the price of most goods and services sold by VAT-registered businesses in the UK. Whether you are writing an invoice, checking a receipt or pricing a product, you usually need one of two calculations.

Adding VAT

Gross = Net × (1 + rate)

£100 net at 20% → £100 × 1.2 = £120.00

Removing VAT

Net = Gross ÷ (1 + rate)

£120 gross at 20% → £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100.00

To remove VAT, always divide. Taking 20% off a VAT-inclusive price is a common mistake: it would turn £120 into £96, not £100. For other percentage sums, such as discounts or price rises, use the percentage calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by 1.2 for the 20% standard rate, or by 1.05 for the 5% reduced rate. For example, £100 plus 20% VAT is £120. Choose “Add VAT” above and the calculator does this for you.

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1.2 for 20% VAT, or by 1.05 for 5% VAT. For example, £120 including 20% VAT is £100 net plus £20 VAT. A common mistake is to subtract 20% of the gross price, which gives the wrong answer (£96 instead of £100).

What is the current VAT rate in the UK?

The standard rate of VAT in the UK is 20%. There is also a reduced rate of 5% (for example domestic energy and children’s car seats) and a zero rate of 0% (for example most food and children’s clothes).

What is the difference between net and gross?

The net amount is the price before VAT. The gross amount is the total including VAT. The VAT amount is the difference between the two.

How are the results rounded?

VAT is calculated precisely and rounded to the nearest penny, with halves rounded up. HMRC allows rounding to the nearest penny on invoices, so the result may differ by a penny from figures produced with other rounding methods.
