How the days are counted
The calculator counts whole calendar days between today and the date you choose. Today isn’t included, so the day before an event shows “1 day to go”, and on the day itself it tells you it’s today.
Popular dates always use the next time the event comes round when you’re counting down, and the most recent time when you’re counting up. Easter Sunday and Black Friday move each year, so they’re worked out for every year automatically.

Frequently asked questions
Does the count include today?
No. It counts whole calendar days between today and the date, so if it’s 24 December there is 1 day until Christmas, and on Christmas Day itself the calculator says it’s today.
How are the days counted?
The calculator compares calendar dates rather than counting 24-hour periods, so clock changes for British Summer Time can’t add or lose a day. Leap years are included automatically.
When is Easter Sunday?
Easter moves every year because it is set by the moon: it is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March (using the church’s calculation). The next dates are Sunday 5 April 2026, Sunday 28 March 2027, Sunday 16 April 2028, Sunday 1 April 2029.
When is Black Friday?
Black Friday is the day after the US Thanksgiving holiday, which is the fourth Thursday in November. That puts it between 23 and 29 November. Many UK shops start their deals earlier.
Why might the summer holiday date not match my school?
Summer holidays start on different dates in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and individual schools and councils set their own term dates. Check your school’s term dates and use a custom date if yours differs.
